How to make pom pom earrings

Add a little colour to your outfit (even if you're not leaving the house!) with a pair of these handmade swoon-worthy earrings. Rainy day craft... sorted!

What you'll need:

  • 2 small pom poms (make yourself or these tiny ready-made pom poms also work really well for jewellery)
  • 2 earring hooks
  • 2 medium-sized jump rings
  • jewellery pliers (optional)

Let's get started:

1. Make two small pom poms. I love using aran-weight yarn in a natural fibre, like the merino wool stocked in the shop to any sized pom poms and it works perfectly for this kind of pom pom, but DK and finer yarns also work well, just remember that you'll need to wrap it more times around the Loome tool to get a denser pom pom.

2. Open one of the jump rings with your jewellery pliers and thread it onto the middle string of the pom pom. Remember when using jump rings, to open it by twisting towards you, so imagine you're creating a spiral rather than an open 'C' shape.

3. Slide your earring hook onto the ring before closing it. Do the same with the other pom pom to make a matching pair.

Add an extra jump ring or two if you want your earring to hang lower, creating a little chain.

This is the absolute basics to making pom pom jewellery. You can do so much with this idea, like using hoops rather than hooks and simply threading a hoop through the centre of the pom pom.

How about stacking pom poms on top of tassels to create 'pom-tass' earrings?
